New Orleans LA The National WWII Museum

April 6, 2017
National World War II Museum
New Orleans, LA

When you purchase your admission, you are given a "dog tag."   Upon entering the museum, the card is used to register your entry.  At that time there are choices of soldiers to choose from and then follow their story throughout the museum.  You can use the card throughout the museum to learn more.  The museum is divided into two parts, "The Road to Tokyo" and "The Road to Berlin."   Both of our soldiers were on the road to Berlin.

In the train car, you learn a bit about your soldier and what is to come.

Roland Ehlers

Roland Ehlers, along with his three brothers and three sisters, grew up on a farm near Junction City, Kansas. In 1940, he and his younger brother, Walt, went to enlist in the Army. Walt was told he was too young, but ended up getting his parents permission to join. After Roland and Walt were accepted into the Army, they were sent to basic training, and then on to California for amphibious training.

Donna followed his story, He was killed in action at Omaha Beach.  His brother fought on.

Edward A. Carter  (Eddie)

Edward Allan Carter, Jr. was born in Los Angeles, but lived with his missionary parents in India, and later Shanghai. Following the Japanese attack on Shanghai, an underage Carter joined the Chinese Army, but after a month on the front lines, his father pleaded for his release from the military. At 19, Carter returned to the US and joined up with the American "Abraham Lincoln Brigade," a group fighting with the Loyalists against General Francisco Franco's Fascist forces in the Spanish Civil War. After two and a half years in Spain, Carter caught a boat back to America where he joined the US Army. His time abroad raised the suspicions of those in the Army, and Carter was put under surveillance.

I followed his story, he received the Distinguished Service Cross.

Merchant Marines Joined the War
I never thought about how the Merchant Marines were involved in the war effort.  They transported the supplies to our men overseas.

There are planes hanging from the ceiling, throughout the museum.

The Road to Tokyo
Please read the posts.  They are much better than anything I could say.

The Players...Chiang, Churchhill, Roosevelt, and Hirohito.  (China, Great Britain, United States, and Japan).

The Ledo Road was a supply route from Ledo, India to China.
The road was built by 15,000 American soldiers (60 percent of whom were African-Americans) and 35,000 local workers at a cost of $150 million.   1,100 Americans died during the construction, as well as many more locals . As most of Burma was in Japanese hands it was not possible to acquire information as to the topographysoils, and river behavior before construction started.  This information had to be acquired as the road was constructed.  After the war, it was allowed to fall into disrepair and has been swallowed up by the jungle.

Desmond T. Doss   If you haven't seen the movie, "Hacksaw Ridge", it is based on the service of this man.  He was a conscientious objector who served without carrying a weapon, and became a hero.

State of Deception
The Power of Nazi Propaganda
This was a Special Exhibit on Loan from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

I will leave it to you to read through these posts and I will only comment occasionally.  This is a very important exhibit that shows how propaganda can sweep you up into a frenzy of hatred and/or acceptance of false doctrines.  Today's propaganda may not be Nazi, but it is still dangerous.

I hope everyone reads this definition of propaganda and remembers it when they look at today's information highways.

Today, the tried and true news organizations are being labeled as "Fake News" whenever they state something that doesn't fit one's idea of truth.  The internet, cable TV, and talk radio spew propaganda on an endless loop.  Be careful what you believe and look for the facts that back up your beliefs.
