One of the most spectacular rescues occurred on the night of 2/18/1952, when 32 crewmen were rescued from the tanker Pendleton.   The tanker broke in half during a Nor'easter storm and 60 foot waves.

On March 17, 1902 seven lifesavers paid the ultimate sacrifice attempting to save five men from the stricken Barge Wadena off Monomoy Island.
The Mack memorial located next to the CG Station in Chatham was erected by the family of William Henry Mack, a crewmember aboard the Barge Wadena.

I could not find any information about this Nickerson, but the Nickerson family was one of the founders of Chatham.

I think they meant Sand Bars, but it's all in the interpretation.
