Niagara County NY

July 21- 26 2016

Welcome to Canada.  The lines were long, but moved quickly.  They wanted to know how long we were staying and did we have any firearms.  We were just driving through, and on to New York, so that was pretty simple.

A few photos of the Canadian countryside

The Cat's Hat Barrels   They just reminded me of the Cat in the Hat.

Silos

About 3 hours later, we re-entered the US.  Long lines and slower entry.

We landed at Niagara Woodlands campground on Thursday, where they only had a 30 Amp site so we took it.  The next day the weekend folks started arriving and later, our surge protector started turning off our power.  The park owners suggested that we unplug the surge protector so it couldn't keep doing that.  NOT the wisest thing for him to say, so we ignored him.   We turned off everything except the  A/C and the refrigerator but it still kept blowing.  Thankfully the temperatures had not risen to the boiling point yet, so Friday night we used only our fans and spent the night with no A/C.  (not what we are used to, but we did survive) The next day they found us a 50A site.

July 22
Friday we started our sightseeing.  There is a road that runs along the rim of the Niagara river with state parks dispersed along the way. There is also a trail along the rim that you can walk that is about 13 miles long.  For the more adventurous, there's a trail at along the river as well.  We did not walk either of them.  Later in our stay we did walk from the Discovery Center to Horseshoe falls, which is about a mile and a half and we walked the trail a bit at each park.

We got lost again, It always makes for some interesting sites, (it's a habit we can't seem to break) and finally got to the Devil's Hole State Park.

The Robert Moses Power Plant and around the bend (not visible from here) is the Canadian Power Plant

The Niagara River. The other side of the river is Canada

A battle that the Native Americans won.

And then to Whirlpool State Park

You have to lean a little to read this.

Canadian Entrepreneurs  run a tram between two Canadian points along the river.
The tram, called the "Aero Car" was built in 1913 and it runs on 6 interlocking cables.

There's also a Zip-line around here somewhere.  We heard it runs along the cliff, not across the river.

Excursion Boat in the whirlpool

It's mesmerizing watching the Whirlpool

This is one mighty river

On down the road to the Discovery center and the old power station.

Looking up the river from the Discovery Center Parking.  We're getting closer to the Falls.

A closeup of the rapids

Niagara State Park Map  We are at the far right of the map.

The Rainbow Bridge to Canada, tons of cars sitting on the bridge.  You can see the mist from the falls in the background.  From this bridge to the falls is pretty commercial on the Canada side.  The US chose to keep it park.

We are standing on the lookout platform of the old Schoellkopf Power Station

This power station collapsed into the river in 1956.  The sign says "Razed" nature took it down.  Here's a link to an article that tells the story of the disaster.

This is the original elevator shaft ( I'm not convinced that that is true) with a newer elevator. Obviously, we took the elevator down to the river.

This house sits on the hill in Canada across from the Schoellkopf Power Station.  What a view.  It's a pretty impressive house and I've tried to find info on it to no avail.  Can anyone help?

We brought some friends with us

My feet hurt, time to go home.
