High Pines Campground in Eagle River, WI

June 16,2016.  I was told that I need to date these posts, since I'm so far behind in blogging.  I'll try to remember.

On Thursday we traveled from Saxon to Eagle River.  My nephew's mother-in-law lives in Phelps, WI.  We planned on visiting her.  We got in early enough to visit with her and go to dinner.  Since she lives there, we had her pick the restaurant.  She took us to the Gateway Lodge. Built in the 1930s, the lodge cost $100,000 to construct.  The original complex consisted of the main Lodge and Inn (65 rooms), a golf course, the Gateway Gun Club, a ski jump and ski chalet, riding stables, an airport and a horse and buggy shuttle from the train station.

The timbers were hand-hewn and burned with red-hot irons and varnished.  They call it a burnt brown finish.  The paneling is native pine joined by tongue and groove.

Too many stuffed animals on the wall for me, but the gun club is still active.

This fireplace was huge.  Some people I know could stand up in it.  Over the years the lodge has had many owners.  The metal sculpture of the bears is the only accessory saved throughout the many iterations and the original logo of the lodge.

For more information check out:  www.gateway-lodge.com     The food was good and company even better.

June 17, 2016  Friday we ventured into the upper peninsula of Michigan to Ottawa National Forest for more waterfalls.  We like waterfalls, have you noticed?  I have run out of adjectives, so here are photos of the three falls we saw on the 17th.  Each one was beautiful in it's own way.  I love the sounds.  Hope you enjoy the photos and if you close your eyes for a bit, you may be able to hear the rushing water.

MEXIMINE FALLS (Mex-i-minnie)

Very calm at the top of the falls.

I understand that one of my great nephews proposed at Bond falls.  Pretty romantic place.

BOND FALLS

This one was a bit harder to find.  The trail is not marked very well.

AGATE FALLS

Not sure what this is above, but it was interesting

June 18, 2016   We needed a relaxing day, so we made arrangements to go back to Phelps and take lunch to our new friend who lives on the lake.  Build your own sandwiches in the kitchen.

A look at some of the photos we've taken

An after lunch stroll to the lake.

  We need a Selfie.

Time to go.  Hope to see you again soon.
